Intent

At Crownfield Infant and Nursery School our intent is to design a mathematics curriculum, which is accessible to all and will maximise the development of every child’s ability and academic achievement. We deliver creative and engaging lessons that embed core mathematical skills to enable our pupils to develop their conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. Children will experience the power and enjoyment of mathematics and develop a sense of curiosity about the subject with a clear and deep understanding. Links within other subjects will be highlighted and skills and mathematical knowledge will be applied, challenging understanding whilst developing problem solving skills. We will equip children with the fundamentals of mathematics that are essential to everyday life and success.

Implementation

Our whole curriculum is shaped by our school vision which aims to involve, inform and improve enabling all children to flourish and become the very best mathematician they can possibly be. We teach the 2014 National Curriculum, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children.

In the Foundation Stage, our young mathematicians will be provided with many exciting opportunities, through planned purposeful play and a mix of adult-led and child-initiated activities, to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding, using numbers and its related vocabulary, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; and to develop their spatial reasoning skills through a variety of areas including shape, space, and measure.

Throughout KS1, our mathematics curriculum provides many opportunities to develop confidence and fluency with whole numbers, counting, place value and the four operations. The use of practical equipment, such as concrete objects and measuring tools, will support children to gain a deeper understanding moving through to pictorial representations and abstract all whilst before being challenged through tasks and questions to explain their reasoning and solve a range of problems. The children are equipped with the skills to recognise shapes and their properties and measures to describe and compare different quantities such as length, mass, capacity/volume, time and money.

In addition to our daily mathematics lessons, all children take part in a Maths Meeting, where fluency and accuracy of number and shape are a key focus. These skills are developed within the short 15minute session alongside opportunities to revisit and review misconceptions and deepen understanding of previously taught content.

Impact

As a result of our maths curriculum and teaching at Crownfield Infant School you will see:

  • Engaged children who are all challenged.
  • Confident children who can all talk about Maths and their learning and the links between Mathematical topics.
  • Lessons that use a variety of resources to support learning.
  • Different representations of mathematical concepts.
  • Learning that is tracked and monitored to ensure all children make good progress.

By the end of KS1 we aim for our children to be fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, building their conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge quickly and accurately. They should have the skills to solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of situations.
